The idea here is that the cleats fit snugly inside the canoe, the thwart extends across the gunwales, and there'll be a piece of webbing bolted to the thwart to wrap around the whole canoe and keep the thing in place.  The webbing and buckles don't need to be load bearing.

I'll round the edge of the 1x2 a bit and probably wrap it in foam.  If the concept of the temporary attachment works, I might repeat it with a more sculpted yoke at some future time.
