un-butt joint 2
I set the depth of the cirular saw to remove the panel and leave the joined pieces. After many passes I then used a wood chisel and hammer to remove the ridges between the kerfs. Mr belt sander put the finishing touches on the scarred patch where the butt-block was removed.

I was disheartened to learn how poor my butt joint was - there was a good-sized air pocket between the panels. I didn't use enough weight to force the panels together.
