The blade scoring makes all the difference.  As is the case in so many other areas, developing an intuitive technique of just the right amount of pressure, takes some practice.  Don't want to cut through into primer or epoxy seal below.  And with six coats, it can be frustrating to try to hit the tape line exactly without coming short and cutting tape and having to retrim back to the tape line.
