The bungee keeps it in just well enough to lift the canoe over your head. Then all the weight is resting on the wood, so it's not needed. Sometimes, the plastic cleats (cut from scraps of cutting board!) pop off when lifting the canoe *off* you shoulders, but you can just pop them back before lifting it again.
